The People We Meet: MR. Pang

March 21, 2023

Surrounded by the towers of housing units, I found Mr. Pang playing his flute in the little hillside park next to my village.

I felt a jolt of energy when I heard him play from the bottom of the hill and knew I needed to strike up a conversation with him. Two years ago I had encountered him by the river I often walk by, but I didn’t have the courage to say ‘hi’ then.

Mr. Pang only picked up the flute a few years ago and he uses it to make friends in parks and jamming with other people. When I approached him he was sitting on one of the benches waiting for a friend he had made who played the erhu.

He was very kind and genuine and even invited me to play whatever instrument I knew with him. I told him I used to play the guitar but was terrible. He imparted on me that he too was not good with the flute but was willing to make friends and learn from other people.

I told him I’m a photographer and would love to take photos of him and help him record a little video. He happily agreed. So I rushed home, got my gear and went back up the hill for a mini shoot. We exchanged contacts but I haven’t heard from him since.
